HOW DO GLP 1's WORK?

The science behind GLP-1 Medications

When you eat, your digestive system releases the GLP-1 hormone. One of its jobs is to tell your body to produce insulin, which reduces your blood sugar levels. High levels of GLP-1 reduces your appetite and makes you feel full.

GLP-1 medications mimic the GLP-1 hormone. Semaglutide and tirzepatide both mimic this body response, leading to a less hunger, a feeling of fullness. These conditions work together to help patients lose weight.

What You Need To Know About
GLP-1 Injections

GLP-1 injections contain GLP-1, which mimics a naturally occurring hormone in the body. This is the same active ingredient used in brand name GLP-1 weight-loss medications. GLP-1 was FDA-approved in 2017 for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and later found to be beneficial for weight loss. It was FDA-approved in 2021 for weight loss. The active ingredient has been shown to help patients achieve an average 15% weight loss.

GLP-1 mimics a hormone known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is naturally produced in the intestines after food intake. Like the hormone, your GLP-1 injection signals the brain to reduce hunger, slow down stomach emptying, and stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin to lower blood sugar levels. These effects work together to support weight loss.

Clinical trials have shown that GLP-1 injections can lead to an average 15% weight loss. These studies have also observed sustained weight loss among participants. Other health benefits associated with weight loss from GLP-1 include improved energy, mood, and sleep; reduced risk for heart disease; improvements in diabetes, blood sugar control, blood pressure control, cholesterol levels, kidney health, and fatty liver disease.

Side effects are typically mild and can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These side effects usually subside within 2-3 weeks, with nausea being considered an "on target" side effect that helps reduce your caloric intake. Less common but more serious side effects can include allergic reactions, low blood sugar, kidney problems (especially if you are very dehydrated), gallstones and pancreatitis. Thyroid tumors or cancer has been observed in rodents, but not yet humans.

You should avoid GLP-Injections if any of the following conditions apply to you:

You are pregnant
You have an allergic reaction to GLP-1 Injections or any of its ingredients
You have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma
You have a personal or family history of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2

Your GLP-1 medication is injected under the skin of your thigh, upper arm, or abdomen. Make sure you rotate the injection site each week. GLP-1 injections can be taken with or without food, at any time of the day. You should take the injection consistently, on the same day each week. If you need to adjust the day of injection, try to avoid injecting within two days of a prior injection. When you forget a dose, make sure to take it within five days of the scheduled injection day.

The standard, FDA-approved dosing schedule for GLP-1 Injections is:

Month 1: 0.25 mg per week
Month 2: 0.5 mg per week
Month 3: 1 mg per week
Month 4: 1.7 mg per week
Month 5: 2.4 mg per week

Most patients start at the lowest dose on the first month, then steadily increase their monthly dosage over the duration of their treatment. 1.7mg and 2.4mg doses are considered maintenance doses.

You are not expected to make strict dietary changes during the plan, but most patients naturally consume fewer calories. As constipation is a side effect to look out for, we recommend having a diet rich in fiber and drinking plenty of water, as doing so can minimize constipation.

Regular exercise while on GLP-1 injections is highly recommended, but not required. You may lose muscle mass while losing weight, and exercising regularly helps retain your muscle mass and fitness, as well as maximize your weight loss.
